Space Exploration: dream and reality

A great lecture, titled Space Exploration: dream and reality, was held in the School of Electrical & Computer Engineering of NTUA on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 given by Dr Daglis and Dr Gkioulidou.

Dr Daglis, Professor of Space Physics at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, showed us many of the space applications that we use in our daily life. Temperature-Regulating Fabrics, designed for astronauts, are used to keep babies comfortable, Blue-Light-Cancelling Lens, created to protect human eyes in space, gives skiers a clearer view and downstream technologies, such as Global Positioning System (GPS) and Flood & Fire Monitoring Systems, are few of the space applications developed by engineers that make our life better.

Dr Gkioulidou, Senior Professional Staff Physicist at the Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), starting with the science fiction movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, presented us the modern space mission. We traveled with her from the journey of Voyager 1 & 2, the two space missions that have reached farther than any other, and the path and the death of Cassini, to the recent plans for space missions.

We would like to thank Dr Daglis and Dr Gkioylidou, for this beautiful space trip, and everyone who attended the event.
