Professor Nikolaos Hatziargyriou receives 2020 GLOBAL ENERGY PRIZE for Outstanding Achievements in Energy


ECE-NTUA Professor Nikolaos Hatziargyriou has been awarded the 2020 Global Energy Prize in the New Ways of Energy Application nomination for his contribution to the stability of power grid system by pioneering smart and microgrid system by using artificial intelligence.

On receiving the award, Prof. Nikolaos Hatziargyriou said that he is deeply satisfied by the receipt of this highly prestigious international award dedicated to addressing world's energy challenges. He is very proud to be recognized for his scientific contribution in operation and control of Microgrids. It is an immense honor for him to be included among the 39 laureates from 14 countries receiving this prize since 2003.

The Global Energy Prize was founded in 2002. According to the Global Energy Association, the prize is awarded annually for outstanding achievements in energy research and technology from around the world that could address some of the world’s most pressing energy challenges. This year’s prize drew 78 nominations across all award categories.

Nikolaos D. Hatziargyriou is Professor in Power Systems at the National Technical University of Athens. He has over 10 year industrial experience as Chairman and CEO of the Hellenic Distribution Network Operator and as executive Vice-Chair of the Public Power Corporation. He was chair and currently vice-chair of the EU Technology and Innovation Platform on Smart Networks for Energy Transition (ETIP-SNET) representing E.DSO. He is honorary member of CIGRE and past Chair of CIGRE SC C6 “Distribution Systems and Distributed Generation”. He is Life Fellow Member of IEEE, past Chair of the Power System Dynamic Performance Committee (PSDPC) and currently Editor in Chief of the IEEE Trans on Power Systems. He has participated in more than 60 RD&D projects funded by the EU Commission, electric utilities and manufacturers for both fundamental research and practical applications. He is author of the book “Microgrids: Architectures and Control” and of more than 250 journal publications and 500 conference proceedings papers. He is included in the 2016, 2017 and 2019 Thomson Reuters lists of the top 1% most cited researchers.
