Stavros Papathanassiou

Short CV

Stavros A. Papathanasiou is Professor in the Electric Power Division of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) since 2002. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from NTUA, with specialization in wind turbine technology, and a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering (Power Engineering), awarded with distinction.

His academic, research and professional activity spans more than three decades, focusing on renewable energy systems (onshore and offshore wind, PV, hybrid systems), electricity storage (batteries, pumped hydro, thermal storage), market and grid integration of distributed energy resources, island systems and interconnections, electricity market and network regulation, smart grids, electromobility and high-resilience power systems. His work is characterized by a strong interface between academic research, applied engineering and energy policy design, with extensive involvement in large-scale national and international projects.

Professor Papathanasiou is Director of the Electrical Machines and Power Electronics Laboratory of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of Postgraduate Programme “Energy Production and Management” of NTUA. He has supervised 13 PhD dissertations (7 completed) and more than 120 diploma and postgraduate theses. His publication record includes over 90 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and more than 170 conference papers, with more than 10,000 citations.

Alongside his academic role, he has acted for many years as senior advisor to Greek and international energy authorities, including the Ministry of Environment and Energy, energy regulators, transmission and distribution system operators, on regulatory, technical and operational aspects of electricity systems, renewable energy integration, energy storage, island systems and interconnections. He has played a central role in the design and implementation of regulatory frameworks and State-aid schemes for renewable energy and electricity storage, as well as in the preparation of National Energy and Climate Plans. He has worked closely with the industry in several major and breakthrough projects in the areas of renewables, storage and power networks. He has extensive international exposure through collaboration with TSOs, DSOs and utilities worldwide and has served as advisor to the International Olympic Committee on power supply infrastructure and energy services for multiple Olympic Games, from Athens 2004 to Paris 2024 and upcoming Games.

Professor Papathanasiou is actively involved in international scientific organizations. He is a Distinguished Member of CIGRE, recipient of the CIGRE Technical Committee Award, has been a national representative to CIGRE Study Committees C1 and C6, and Convenor of Working Group C6.24 on hosting capacity of distribution networks. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and regularly serves as reviewer for leading journals and evaluator for research programmes.
