Research Professor Georgios Stamatakos introduces in silico medicine to the medical community of Greece
The new scientific, technological and progressively clinical domain of in silico medicine was introduced to the wider medical community of Greece by Research Professor Georgios Stamatakos during the 6th Forum “Biosciences, Innovation, Technology and Cancer: From Prevention to Treatment”. The latter took place in Athens on 15-17 October 2021.
Dr G. Stamatakos was invited to participate in the event and chair one of its sessions by the Forum President Dr Paris Kosmidis, MD, past President of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).
The conference was a complete success with around 1000 online participants. A stunning feature of the forum was the massive and dynamic participation of medical students from around the country. The reception of in silico medicine by the medical community was just enthusiastic!
The contribution of the In Silico Oncology and In Silico Medicine Group, Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), founded and directed by Dr G. Stamatakos, to the genesis, shaping and advancement of in silico medicine has been internationally recognized as pivotal (in silico medicine see chapter “History” and throughout the rest of the article and its references).
Of particular academic importance is the globally first postgraduate course on in silico medicine created by Research Professor G. Stamatakos and subsequently approved by ECE-NTUA and introduced into its doctoral studies programme (see related post at VPH). This course has been taught by the same person continuously since 2014. The course is now offered to both postgraduate and undergraduate engineering and medical students (see related post).
According to the Virtual Physiological Human Institute, which serves as an advisor to the European Commission, and of which Research Professor G. Stamatakos is a Member of its Board of Trustees, "In Silico Medicine will be the future!". A key recent development regarding the practical applicability and the potential of the new domain is the integration of in silico medicine into the methods and tools arsenal of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). See related post at VPH Institute.
