The DAEDALUS supercomputer is coming to NTUA
According to the NTUA press release, a very powerful new generation supercomputer, "DAEDALUS" will be installed in the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park (LTCP) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
On Friday, 1 July 2022, a memorandum of long-term cooperation between the Ministry of Digital Governance and NTUA was signed by the Minister Mr. Kyriakos Pierrakakis and the Rector Prof. Andreas G. Boudouvis. Also, a relevant agreement was signed between the Greek Research & Technology Network (GRNET) and the NTUA Property Development and Management Company represented, respectively, by the President Prof. Stefanos Kollias, and the Vice-President Prof. Dimitris Kaliampakos.
DAEDALUS will be installed in the 1,500 sq.m. building of the historic Power Station of the French Mining Company of Lavrion in LTCP.
The signing ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Finance Mr. Theodoros Skylakakis, and the President of the GRNET Advisory Committee and national representative in the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC-JU) Prof. Nectarios Kozyris.
As the Rector Andreas Boudouvis mentioned, the National Technical University of Athens undertakes from GRNET, an organization supervised by the Ministry of Digital Governance, to install, in the LTCP, to manage and utilize the DAEDALUS supercomputer system, of national scope, which in terms of capabilities is at the cutting edge of performance in international scale. It is an important project, primarily for the country, for the development and competitiveness of the domestic complex research-technology-innovation ecosystem. The project, with a total budget of 50 million euros, is financed by the EuroHPC and by the National Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
The selection of Greece as one of the four European countries to host the leading mid-scale high-performance supercomputers (pre-exascale or petascale) was recently announced by EuroHPC-JU. Specifically, the announcement concerns the development of the first European exascale supercomputer and the installation of four supercomputers in Europe, one of which is DAEDALUS. The planning of the facility in Lavrion has been done with environmental sustainability in mind. DAEDALUS will be powered by renewable energy systems and modern cost effective cooling systems will be employed.
