Nikita received the diploma in Electrical Engineering and the Ph.D. degree from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), as well as the M.D. degree from the Medical School, University of Athens. From 1990 to 1996, she worked as a researcher at the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems. In 1996, she joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, NTUA, as an assistant professor, and since 2005, she serves as a professor at the same school. She is director of the Mobile Radiocommunications Lab and director of the Biomedical Simulations and Imaging Lab, NTUA. Since 2015, she is the Irene McCulloch Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Medicine, at Keck School of Medicine and Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California.
Her current research interests include computational bioelectromagnetics, mobile health, biomedical signal and image processing and analysis, multi-scale, multi-level simulation, computational neuroscience, and intelligent systems for real-time medical decision support.

She is the editor of the "Handbook of Biomedical Telemetry", published by Wiley-IEEE, 2014. In addition, her published work includes 8 books in English (as co-editor) and two books in Greek (as author), 12 journal special issues as guest editor, 190 papers in refereed international journals, 41 chapters in books and over 350 papers in international conference proceedings. She holds three patents. She has been the technical manager of several European and National R&D projects. She is the Editor in Chief of the IEEE Open Journal of Antennas and Propagation, Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation and IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, Founding Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics and has served on the editorial board of several other journals (Elsevier-Bioelectromagnetics, Springer-Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Computing, etc.). She has been honorary chair/chair of the program/organizing committee of more than 50 international conferences, while she has served as keynote/invited speaker at several international conferences, symposia and workshops. She has been the advisor of 29 completed Ph.D. theses, several of which have received various awards. She has received various honors/awards, with the Bodossakis Foundation Academic Prize (2003) for exceptional achievements in “Theory and Applications of Information Technology in Medicine” being one of them. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a Founding Fellow of the European Association of Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES), a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece and of the Athens Medical Association. She has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Atomic Energy Commission and of the Hellenic National Academic Recognition and Information Center, as well as a member of the Hellenic National Council of Research and Technology and of the Hellenic National Ethics Committee. She has also served as the Deputy Head of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the NTUA (2010-2014, 2018-2020). She is a member of the IEEE-EMBS Technical Committee on Biomedical and Health Informatics (TC BHI) and Chair of the IEEE Greece Section and has served on the IEEE-EMBS Administrative Committee (AdCom). Currently, she serves as Chair of the LS7 Consolidator Grant Panel of the European Research Council (ERC), for granting investigator-driven frontier research in the domain of life sciences.
