Description

Radiation and matter interactions, spontaneous and stimulated emission, coherent and non-coherent sources, lasers, laser systems and high power lasers. Linear and non-linear optics, modulation of optical beams, laser beams modulation and detection, introduction to optical communications. Propagation of laser beams in the atmosphere, rangefinders, LIDARS. Applications of laser beams in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Communications, Industry, Thermonuclear Fusion, Optical Computers, Environment, Holography, Cultural Heritage. Infrared technology, imaging and storage of information, infrared vision, thermal vision. Specific lasers, laser systems and their applications, optically pumped lasers (Nd:YAG, Er:YAG, Ruby, e.tc.). gas lasers (CO2, N2, Ar, Kr, e.tc.), dye lasers, excimer lasers, chemical lasers, semiconductor lasers, fiber lasers, free electron lasers, e.tc. Q-switching, mode-locking, second harmonic generation, parametric oscillation. The course includes laboratory exercises.
