Brief Biography


Athanasios (Thanasis) Rontogiannis is an Associate Professor with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. He received the Diploma (M.Eng.) in electrical engineering from NTUA, in 1991, the M.A.Sc. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Victoria, Canada, in 1993, and the Ph.D. in signal processing and communications from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, in 1997, with a scholarship from the Greek State Scholarship Foundation. From 1998 to 2003, he was a Lecturer at the University of Ioannina, Greece, and from 2003 to 2021 he was with the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS) of the National Observatory of Athens, where he has been a Research Director since 2017 and the Deputy Director of IAASARS from 2020 to 2021.

Dr. Rontogiannis has served at the Editorial Boards of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (2017-2021), the EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing (2008-2017) and the EURASIP Elsevier Signal Processing Journal (2011-2022). In 2020 he received the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing outstanding editorial board service award. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, a member of the EURASIP and the Technical Chamber of Greece. From 2018 to 2022, he has also been the Chair of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Greece Chapter.

Research Interests

Signal processing and machine learning, computational signal and image processing, adaptive (online) signal processing algorithms, hyperspectral image processing and analysis, sparse and low-rank signal representations, matrix and tensor low-rank model approximations.
