Stavros Papathanassiou

Professor   Division of Electric Power

Brief Biography

He received the Diploma in Electrical Engineering and his PhD from the School of Electrical & Computer Engineering of NTUA in 1991 and 1997. His Ph.D. thesis was in the field of wind energy, dealing with the analysis of the electrical part and control of variable speed wind turbines.

From 1991 to 2002 he worked as a researcher in the Electric Power Division of NTUA. In 1992-1994 he worked as a technical consultant with the Quality Control Department of distribution transformer manufacturer ELVIM S.A. (Group Schneider). From 1998 to 2002 he was the coordinator of the Inter-departmental Postgraduate Course “Energy Production and Management” of NTUA, where he is still actively involved. From 2000 to 2002 he worked for the Distribution Division of the Public Power Corporation, where he was engaged in the design of distribution installations, in power quality studies and the elaboration of technical guidelines for the connection of distributed generation to the grid. In 2002 he joined the Electric Machines and Power Electronics Laboratory of NTUA, where he currently is a Professor. He has been a technical consultant to the Distribution Division of the Public Power Corporation (PPC), to the Athens 2004 Olympics Organizing Committee and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in distribution network analysis and design. From 2009 to 2012 he was a member of the Executive Board of the Hellenic Transmission System Operator (HTSO) and Market Operator.

He has taught or is currently teaching courses on renewable energy sources, power system analysis, distribution networks, electric machines and power electronics. His research interests mainly lie in the field of distributed generation, renewable energy sources and electricity storage. He has participated in more than 50 research and consulting projects, in 30 of them as the scientific responsible, in the field of wind energy, photovoltaics, electricity storage, autonomous power systems, distribution networks and island interconnections. He has authored more than 200 scientific papers published in international journals and conference proceedings, which have received more than 2500 citations.

He is a reviewer for many journals in electric power engineering (IEEE Transactions, IET Proceedings, Elsevier Journals etc.), as well as for several conferences in the field. He is an evaluator of research, development and demonstration proposals and projects for national and international programmes.

He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, member of CIGRE and the Technical Chamber of Greece. He is the national representative to the CIGRE Study Committee SC6 – Distribution Systems and Dispersed Generation. He is the secretary of the CIRED Greek National Liaison Committee and member of the Board of the Greek CIGRE National Committee. He has participated in several CIGRE Task Forces, dealing with distributed generation and storage, and was the convenor of CIGRE WG C6.24 “Capacity of Distribution Feeders for Hosting DER”. He received the CIGRE Technical Committee Award 2013. He has been the Greek representative to the Mirror Group of the EU “SmartGrids” Technology Platform.
