Presentation and solution of the optimal control problem for finite dimensional linear and nonlinear systems. Equal emphasis is given both to the Pontryagin Maximum Principle and to Dynamic Programming. The connection to optimization methods in finite dimensional vector spaces is examined as well as the relationship to classical problems of the calculus of variations. Optimal control algorithms are described and examples are given from various application areas.
