Dissemination of Frequency Allocation of Digital Radio Broadcast and International Coordination Procedures to the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media

Radio broadcasting is an integral part of information and entertainment of the people. For many decades, the radio broadcasting signal was analogue transmitted, mainly in the FM Band. The development of technology and the need for increase in the spectral efficiency has led to the development of digital broadcasting systems.

The DAB/DAB + system is best suited for the operation of large-scale broadcasting networks, which has led to its global growth in the recent years.

The Wireless & Long Distance Laboratory (WLDCL) of the School of ECE of the NTUA, with Prof. C. Capsalis as a scientific advisor, undertook the design of the first Digital Radio Plan in the period 2017-2018.

Objects of the project were as follows:

  • Selection of the transmission sites
  • Determination of the technical parameters of the Transmission Stations
  • Design of the corresponding Single Frequency Networks with emphasis on interference minimization
  • Channel allocation to the Single Frequency Networks for radio programs transmission
  • International coordination of the channels with the neighboring telecommunications countries

For the implementation of the project, WLDCL applied sophisticated radio-resources allocation techniques (stochastic optimization algorithms) as well as state-of-the-art software tools (ICS Telecom).

Network synchronization studies as well as analysis of the estimated field coverage were carried out by applying the relevant technical recommendations and reports of the relevant international organizations (ITU, EBU).

With the publication of the DAB+ Digital Radio Frequency Plan in 2018, Greece is in line with current technological developments and opens new perspectives for information and entertainment for the listeners.
