Professor Nikolaos Hatziargyriou receives 2020 GLOBAL ENERGY PRIZE AWARD


Professor Nikolaos Hatziargyriou (ECE-NTUA) has been named a winner of the 2020 GLOBAL ENERGY PRIZE AWARD, in the “New Ways of Energy Application” nomination, for his contribution to the stability of the power grid system by pioneering smart and microgrid system by using artificial intelligence. Prof. Hatziargyriou was honored by the Global Energy Association at a special ceremony during the Russian Energy Week held on October 13, 2021, in Moscow.

The names of the 2020 laureates were announced on September 8, 2020, at the TsiolkovskyState Museum of Cosmonautics in the Russian city of Kaluga. Prof. Hatziargyriou shares the award with Prof. Carlo Rubbia (Gran Sasso Science Institute, Italy) and Prof. Peidong Yang (University of California, Berkeley, USA). All three 2020 laureates are distinguished scientists in the field of energy and were selected from 78 scientists from a total of 20 countries.

The Global Energy Prize is awarded by the non-profit Organization Global Energy Association which is supported by major Russian energy companies. Since 2003, 42 Researchers from 15 countries have been awarded the Global Energy Prize. This is an international award accompanied by prize money which is given for "outstanding scientific research and scientific-technical developments in the field of energy which promote greater efficiency and environmental security for energy sources on Earth in the interests of all mankind".
