Student Team 'Aiolos' NTUA at ISWTC

During October 2022, a small wind turbine manufacturing workshop was organized by the Smart Grids Research Unit of the Electric Energy Systems Laboratory οf the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of NTUA, in cooperation with the Laboratory of Aerodynamics of the School of Mechanical Engineering at NTUA. This workshop assisted in the creation of the NTUA small wind turbine student team, 'Aiolos'.

During the one-week workshop, electrical and mechanical engineering students formed working groups to build a small wind turbine from scratch, using simple tools, materials, and fabrication techniques. Wood was used for the blades, steel for the mounting frame, and plywood for the tail, copper wire for the coils, and neodymium magnets cast in resin for the generator's stator and rotor. In a follow up workshop, the newly formed small wind turbine student team assisted in the construction of the tilt up guyed tower for the installation of the small wind turbine at the demo site of Gaidouromantra on Kythnos island.

During this year, the team designed and constructed a small wind turbine (rated power 200 W, rotor diameter of 1.6 m) for small scale rural electrification applications, for participating at the International Small Wind Turbine Contest (ISWTC) in Delft, Netherlands.

Aiolos competed alongside ten other teams from around the world in the wind tunnel of TU Delft, and managed to pass successfully all tests and requirements of the contest. The students returned full of knowledge, experience, and a lot of enthusiasm for working on a new design in the upcoming academic year.
