Professor Pavlos P. Sotiriadis was named IEEE Fellow

We are thrilled to announce that Professor Pavlos-Petros (Paul-Peter) P. Sotiriadis of the NTUA School of Electrical and Computer Engineering has been named a 2023 IEEE Fellow for his contributions to Advanced Frequency Synthesis and High-Speed Data Buses.

This is a great recognition of Prof. Sotiriadis’ contributions to two important technical areas: Frequency Synthesis, which is of fundamental importance in Radar, Telecommunication, Navigation, Timing, Instrumentation and other systems, and, (on-chip) High-Speed Data Buses (optimization) for increasing on-chip data transmission speed and power efficiency.

Prof. Sotiriadis innovations in these two areas include among others the invention of the Diophantine frequency synthesis (for RF and optical applications), the introduction of homodyne single-bit all-digital synthesizers and the creation of the operation theory of the digital-to-period (flying adder) frequency synthesizer. Also, he was the first to introduce models of on-chip communication interconnect networks in nano-scale (deep-sub-micron) integration technology nodes and used them to develop data coding architectures and methodologies enabling efficient and high-speed data transmission and improving signal integrity, and to derive the fundamental performance limits of all coding architectures, establishing benchmarks for the work that followed. His work has been adopted by the industry and included in technical books, which is an important criterion for elevation to the Fellow level.

Professor Sotiriadis received the Ph.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and the Diploma in ECE from the NTUA in 1994 with the highest GPA of 9.91/10. Immediately after graduating from MIT he joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University, ECE Department, where he collaborated with the Space Department of the JHU - Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, MD, USA. In 2012 he joined the faculty of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. Prof. Sotiriadis runs a research team of 30 Engineers in the NTUA Electronics Laboratory. His research interests include the Design, optimization, and Mathematical modeling of Analog, mixed-signal and RF Integrated and discrete circuits, Sensors and instrumentation architectures with emphasis in Biomedical instrumentation, advanced RF frequency synthesis, and, the application of Machine Learning and general AI techniques in the design and operation of electronic circuits. He has received numerous awards, including the prestigious IEEE Guillemin-Cauer Award in 2012, Best Paper Awards ( IEEE-ICM 2021, IEEE-SBCCI 2021, IEEE-ICM 2020, IEEE-MOCAST 2019, IEEE-FCS 2012, IEEE-ISCAS 2007 ), the IΕΕΕ CAS Society Outstanding Technical Committee Award 2022 for serving as an officer, and many others. Prof. Sotiriadis is the Chair of the IEEE Circuits and Systems & Solid-State Circuits Joint Chapter, Greece, and the Secretary of the Analog Signal Processing committee of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.

IEEE Fellow is one of IEEE's most prestigious Honors and the highest grade of IEEE membership, awarded to a very limited number of Senior Members who have made significant contributions to the advancement or application of Engineering, Science and Technology. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for elevation to IEEE Fellow. Less than 0.1% of voting IEEE members are selected annually for this member grade elevation. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. Through its 400,000 plus members in 160 countries, the association is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power, and consumer electronics.

According to the IEEE Fellows Directory, Prof. Sotiriadis is the only IEEE Fellow in the technical area of Integrated Circuits (micro-Electronics) in Greece, one of the seven IEEE Follows who are active Faculty members of the NTUA, and, one of the 26 IEEE Fellows in Greece in all IEEE fields.
