CSLAB of ECE NTUA @ EESTech Challenge 2018

EESTech Challenge 2018 on Big Data Analytics with the academic supervision of NTUA's Computing Systems Laboratory

EESTEC is a non-political, non-profit organization of and for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) students at universities, institutes and technical schools in Europe that connects more than 4000 students from 32 countries and 55 universities.

The EESTech Challenge is a yearly competition with the aim to gain knowledge in a specific popular technical field. The competition consists of two levels: 23 Local Rounds, by different EESTEC Commitments from February to March and the Final Round, which will take place in May 2018 in Novi Sad where the winners of the local rounds will compete with each other.

The scientific topic for the 2018 challenge is “Big Data Analytics” and it has been scientifically and technically organized by the Computing Systems Laboratory (CSLAB). More specific, CSLAB Members Dr. Ioannis Konstantinou, Dr. Dimitrios Tsoumakos, Ioannis Mytilinis and Evdokia Kassela were responsible for creating local round guidelines for all the 23 local rounds, providing technical seminars on Big Data Analytics and for organizing the Athens Local round Challenge in the form of a “Hackathlon” (i.e., programming contest).

The Athens Local Round was held on Saturday 17/3/2018 in the premises of the NTUA, inside and outside of the Central Ceremony Hall. The topic of the challenge was “Big Data Analytics in Bitcoin Transactions Data”, where the contestants executed Big Data algorithms over the laboratory’s computational infrastructure to perform analytics from publicly available actual bitcoin transactions.

More than 40 contestants from different universities including NTUA, UOA, AUEB, UNIPI and DUTH created 15 programming teams that participated in the contest trying to solve the analytics challenge posed by the CSLAB scientific committee. The contest was running for more than eight hours during which the contestants were supported by the committee.

The team that won the contest will participate in the Final Round that will take place in Novi Sad this May. This year’s winner is DataNoobs, consisting of Nikoleta- Markela Iliakopoulou, Konstantinos Agiannis and Michail Mengisoglou, students in the ECE school of NTUA.
