Highlights from Prof. Donald R. Sadoway' s lecture at ECE NTUA

On Friday, October 26, Donald R. Sadoway, John F. Elliott Professor of Materials Chemistry of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, gave at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, an exciting lecture on “Innovating towards an all-electric future via profitable sustainability”.

Prof. Sadoway stressed out that electricity storage is critical to widespread deployment of green and renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbine generators while offering huge benefits to today’s electrical grid operation, improving stability and reducing price volatility.

Prof. Sadoway presented his invention of the liquid metal battery which provides colossal power capability and long lifetime at very low cost as well as round-trip efficiency of greater than 80% with measurements showing retention of 99% of initial storage capacity after 10 years of daily cycling. He described the transition of his invention from an academic effort to an MIT spin-off, to production and he presented the entrepreneurial side of engineering.
