ECE-NTUA New Student Welcome Event and Academic Orientation


The official Welcoming Event for the ECE-NTUA new students (academic year 2019-2020) took place on October 23, 2019, at the Ceremonial Hall of the NTUA Administration Building.

The students were welcomed by the Dean of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the NTUA, Professor Nectarios Koziris, who congratulated them on their success and emphasized the School’s tradition of attracting excellent students, offering them high-quality studies and facilities. He said “We are pleased that you are joining the NTUA community”. He pointed that the School has a long history of operation and contribution in the development of society in Greece, and he referred to the large-scale anniversary event that the School organized on the occasion of its 100 years of operation on November 27, 2017. Furthermore, the Dean highlighted that the School has a curriculum consisted of 215 courses (mandatory, elective and optional) and has a very active presence in both fundamental and applied research. He also noted that ours is the only School in Greece that is included in the ranking of both “Engineering Electrical and Electronic” and “Computer Science and Information Technology” and that according to latest World University Rankings, ECE-NTUA remains among the best ECE Schools worldwide. Finally, he advised the new students to remain consistent, to be committed towards their studies, to have critical thinking, and broaden their horizons by asking and learning things from the experts.

Professor Konstantina Nikita, coordinator of the Undergraduate Studies Committee, continued with the Academic Orientation and presented the undergraduate program in detail. Professor Nikita urged the first-year students to take advantage of all the academic opportunities they will be given, to socialize and interact with their fellow students and Professors and to get involved in School events and groups.

Professor George Fikioris, member of the Postgraduate Studies Committee talked about the Graduate School Program, emphasizing the importance of the Electrical and Computer Engineering field, and reminding the students that “we live at the Time of the 4th Industrial Revolution”.

In recognition of their distinguished service to ECE-NTUA, honorary distinctions were awarded to Professors C. Vournas, E. Dialynas, N. Theodorou, V. Maglaris, G. Papavassilopoulos, K. Pekmestzi, I. Stathopoulos, G. Stassinopoulos, D. Tsamakis and K. Xizanidis, who recently retired. The retired Professors shared stories of their own early days at NTUA.

Brief presentations of the NTUA Computer Center, NTUA Network Operations Center (NOC), and NTUA Central Library followed, and the students were encouraged to take advantage of the services and facilities offered.

The event continued outside of the Ceremonial Hall, where ECE-NTUA research groups and scientific societies/clubs presented their work to newcomers, and a light lunch was offered to all participants.
