Paper led by Smart-RUE of ECE-NTUA receives 2023 Best Paper Award of the IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy (OAJPE)

We are very happy to announce that the 2020 invited paper: A. Vasilakis, Igyso Zafeiratou, D. T. Lagos and Nikos Hatziargyriou, "The Evolution of Research in Microgrids Control," in IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy vol. 7, pp. 331-343, 2020, doi: 10.1109/OAJPE.2020.3030348 has been selected as one of the three best papers of the IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy (OAJPE) in the 2023 awards.

The paper provides an overview of research in Microgrids control carried out in the last 20 years. Microgrids are considered as key components in power system decentralization, providing viable solutions for rural electrification, enhancing reliability and resilience and supporting local energy communities. Their main characteristic is the coordinated control of the interconnected distributed energy resources (DER), which can be realized by various methods, ranging from decentralized, communication-free approaches to centralized ones, where decisions are taken at a central point. The paper provides an overview of this development focusing on the technical control solutions proposed by researchers for the various levels of MG organization hierarchy. A critical assessment of selected, popular technologies is provided and open research questions regarding the trend to more decentralized power systems are discussed.
