The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the NTUA has recently conducted a study for the Hellenic Wind Energy Association (HWES) entitled "Alternative scenarios for the development of renewable energy mix: Evaluation of operation and market revenues of RES stations for 80% RES penetration". The study explores various scenarios of renewable energy source (RES) mix deployments in the Greek power system, in its anticipated development for a 80% RES penetration level by 2030, looking specifically at how the different RES technology mixtures may affect curtailments and market revenues of RES plants.

Τhe study highlights the following:

o Significant levels of RES curtailments are presented in scenarios with a very high deployment of photovoltaics (PVs). Τhe curtailments concern all RES technologies and predominantly PV plants.

o A reduction of RES curtailments and increase of achieved RES penetration are attained with a balanced participation of wind farms (WFs) and PVs in the RES mix.

o For all RES technologies, curtailments are predominantly due to the midday congestion caused by the coincident generation of PVs.

o Market revenues of PV and wind plants are strongly affected by the composition of the energy mix.

Overall, the analysis revealed that a balanced RES development pattern reduces curtailments of all RES technologies and increases the achieved RES penetration level. Further, it enhances market revenues, especially for PV plants, whose energy efficiency and average market compensation price are enhanced.

The research team involved in this study included Prof. Stavros Papathanassiou, Dr. Georgios Psarros and Pantelis Dratsas, PhD candidate in ECE-NTUA.
