Successful ERIGrid 2.0 Summer School "Advanced operation and control of active distribution networks: 2nd Edition” at ICCS of ECE-NTUA and HEDNO

Five years after the successful ERIGrid Summer School, ERIGrid 2.0 project partners' ICCS-NTUA, HEDNO, TUDelft, UCY and DERlab organized the 2nd Summer School on "Advanced operation and control of active distribution networks". The Summer School took place at the premises of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) from 3rd to 6th June 2024.

The event was attended by 25 participants from 5 EU countries from academia and industry that provided excellent feedback.

1) The Summer School included specialized technical lectures from ICCS-NTUA, University of Cyprus, TUDelft, University of Vaasa, KAUST and University of Peloponnese on key aspects of modern distribution networks and smart grids such as:

  • Microgrid primary, secondary control and applications
  • Advanced laboratory testing of active distribution networks
  • Advanced ancillary services from PV and storage Units
  • Digitalized centralized protection applying 5G
  • Deep learning for energy forecasting
  • Cybersecurity of active distributions networks and cybersecurity of load-frequency control
  • Decentralized control and blockchain
  • Leveraging flexibility in smart distribution networks
  • Electric mobility and power systems
  • Power system resilience assessment and enhancement

2) Several Hardware in the loop (HIL) laboratory sessions took place at the Electric Energy Systems laboratory of ECE-NTUA:

  • Industrial experiences on HIL Testing of industrial Power Plant Controller for RES by PROTASIS SA. Live demonstration
  • Hands-on CHIL tests of inverter controls. Participants were divided in 4 groups for hands-on experience.
  • Cybersecurity of digital substations by TUDelft.

3) An industry day at the premises of the Greek DSO, HEDNO,was carried out. It included:

  • A visit to Attica's Distribution Network Control Center: Network Operation – SCADA - DMS
  • HEDNO Experts Session on key topics of interest
  • Tour at HEDNO Laboratories of Electricity Meters and Measurement Transformers

4) A visit to the Meltemi camp smart grid pilot site was carried out.
