Delegation from the Dept. of Electrical Engineering - TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY visits the School of ECE-NTUA
On Tuesday 10th of December, the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) - NTUA hosted a distinguished delegation from the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, fostering academic exchange and collaboration in the field of electrical engineering and energy systems.
The visit was arranged by Prof. Nikos Hatziargyriou, Emeritus Professor at ECE-NTUA, following his appointment as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University in 2023.
The Tsinghua University delegation comprised:
Prof. Chongqing Kang, Full Professor and Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering, President of the Tsinghua University Energy Internet Research Institute (EIRI), President of the Tsinghua Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute,
Prof. Lin Cheng, Tenured Associate Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Director of the Energy Internet Planning and Design Center, Tsinghua University Energy Internet Research Institute (EIRI), and
Dr. Jing Dai, research-track assistant professor of the Institute for National Governance and Global Governance, Deputy Director of the Energy Governance Research Center of the Tsinghua University Energy Internet Research Institute (EIRI).
The visitors were warmly welcomed by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Lifelong Education of NTUA, Prof. Athanasios Zisis, and the Vice Dean of the School of ECE, Prof. Pavlos Georgilakis.
The Vice Dean and Ms. Antonia Lampropoulou, Head of NTUA International Relations Department provided an in-depth presentation of the history, academic achievements, and research priorities of the NTUA and the ECE School’s structure, research activities and contributions to the field of electrical engineering, respectively.
This was followed by fruitful discussions, exploring opportunities for expanded collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the advancement of academic and research initiatives between the two institutions.
A highlight of the visit was the lectures presented by two members of the delegation, held in the Multimedia Amphitheater and open to the students of the School.
Prof. Chongqing Kang delivered the first lecture, titled “Power System Decarbonization Pathways in China”. He pointed out the pivotal changes necessary within the power industry to achieve carbon neutrality, and the technological hurdles in the development of a novel power system paradigm. He presented the decarbonization goals for China and forecasted and analyzed the key technologies that are poised for significant advancements in the near future.
The second lecture, was presented by Dr. Jing Dai and titled “Some key policies that support China’s energy transition: what they are and how we helped make them”. Dr. Dai highlighted the key policies supporting China's energy transition and the contribution of EIRI to their development through the design of electricity markets, and the support in the revision of the Renewable Energy Law.
Subsequent to the lectures, the delegation toured ECE’s three state-of-the-art laboratories. They were guided through the Electric Energy Systems Laboratory (EESL) by Ms. Alkistis Kontou, Senior Researcher – PhD Candidate, the High Voltage Laboratory (HV Lab) by Prof. Ioannis Gonos and the Photonics Communications Research Laboratory (PCRL) by Assistant Prof. Dimitrios Apostolopoulos and other PCRL Team members.
